About The Salsa Lab
-
At The Salsa Lab, we teach Cuban salsa in a fun, safe, and welcoming space, helping dancers build the skills, confidence, and connection they need to enjoy dancing with others.
Whether you're completely new to salsa or returning to the dance floor, we provide clear guidance at the right level and a structured pathway for learning. We focus on strong foundations, confident lead–follow skills, body awareness, musicality, and meaningful dance connection.
There is always more to discover. We don't believe learning needs to be rushed. Taking the time to understand, practise, and develop your dancing at a pace that works for you can lead to stronger skills, greater confidence, and more enjoyment along the way. We're learning too! Continually developing our own dancing, teaching, and understanding so that The Salsa Lab can keep growing with our students.
Ultimately, salsa is a social dance. We encourage dancers to take what they learn into the wider dance community, where they can practise with different partners, build confidence, respond to the music, and experience the joy of putting their learning into practice.

We don't believe good dancing comes from simply learning more moves. We focus on helping dancers understand what they're learning, develop the skills to use it, and build on those skills over time.
Go Slow to Go Fast
Strong foundations take time. By slowing down and taking the time to understand and practise the basics well, dancers build better habits, enjoy dancing more, and ultimately progress further. We're interested in helping you become a better dancer.
Learn in Different Ways
Our classes are informed by research into how adults learn, and we deliberately use different ways of engaging with new material. You might learn through demonstration, explanation, movement, partner work, or visual examples — then have opportunities to actively recall and apply what you've learned through games, challenges and practice.
We also give dancers an active role in their own learning. Practice challenges, opportunities to choose what to focus on, and guidance on different ways to practise help you become more confident in working on your dancing beyond the classroom.
Practice, Feedback & Reflection
We give dancers time to try things for themselves, receive feedback, revisit earlier learning and identify what to focus on next. Mistakes are part of learning, and we encourage curiosity, experimentation and questions along the way.
Knowledge Becomes Skill Through Practice
Class gives you knowledge, guidance and opportunities to practise. Consistent practice is what turns that knowledge into skill. That's why we revisit earlier learning, build in opportunities for recall and practice, and encourage dancers to keep working on their skills between classes.

At The Salsa Lab, we want to keep learning alive beyond the studio.
Our dedicated online Learning Hub is designed to support the classes you're taking with us — giving you a place to revisit what we've covered, reinforce your knowledge, and extend your learning between sessions. Class recaps, videos, practice resources and short quizzes give you different ways to revisit and engage with what you've learned.
You can return to material when you need it, test your understanding, practise between classes, and build on what you've already learned.
It's an extension of the classroom, giving you more opportunities to practise, explore and turn knowledge into skill.
Meet the Founder
I’m Michael Horne, founder and lead instructor of The Salsa Lab.
I began dancing salsa in my early twenties and have been active on the social dance floor for around a decade. While I’ve explored a range of partner dances, salsa and kizomba are the ones I keep coming back to — one for its energy and playfulness, the other for its slower, more connected feel.
For me, the magic of salsa happens in the moment: sharing music, movement and connection with another person. Every dance is different, and that spontaneity keeps me coming back to the floor.
I regularly attend salsa festivals and socials around New Zealand, and seek out local dance communities whenever I travel. These experiences bring new ideas, inspiration and perspectives into my own dancing and teaching.
In my classes, I focus on strong foundations, partner connection and social confidence, while paying attention to the small technical details that can make a big difference. I’m also exploring rumba and other Afro-Cuban traditions, with the hope of bringing more of this into The Salsa Lab over time.
I believe that, just like our students, we're never finished learning. I continue to develop my dancing and teaching through mentoring, ongoing learning, and resources from instructors and dancers around the world. Online learning has opened up ideas and perspectives beyond our local dance community, which I can bring into my own practice and teaching. The Salsa Lab is something I'm learning and growing alongside the people who dance with us.
