Terms and Conditions – Class Participation

By registering for or attending classes, workshops, or events organised by The Salsa Lab, you agree to the following Terms and Conditions.

1. Participation

Participants must:

  • Register before attending classes where required.

  • Follow all instructions given by teachers and staff.

  • Participate in a way that supports a safe, respectful learning environment for everyone.

Teachers reserve the right to ask participants to modify behaviour or leave a class if it disrupts the learning environment or compromises safety.

Participation in classes or events is at the discretion of The Salsa Lab.

2. Attendance, Missed Classes, and Catch-Up

Our courses are progressive and build from week to week. If a student misses two consecutive classes, or any three classes within a term, it may not be suitable for them to continue in the current intake without some form of catch-up.

In these cases, continued participation will be at the discretion of The Salsa Lab.

Any catch-up support is offered at our discretion, subject to availability, and may involve an additional cost.

Missed classes do not automatically entitle a student to replacement classes, refunds, or transfer to a future intake.

3. Health and Safety

Dance is a physical activity and may involve physical contact between participants.

By registering for classes you confirm that:

  • You are physically able to participate in dance classes.

  • You will inform the teacher of any injuries, medical conditions, or physical limitations that may affect your participation.

  • Where you have any existing injury, medical condition, or uncertainty about your ability to participate safely, you will seek appropriate professional or medical advice before attending classes.

  • You will take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others.

Participants are responsible for managing their own physical limits and choosing whether to participate in any activity.

4. Assumption of Risk and Injury Waiver

By participating in classes or events run by The Salsa Lab, you acknowledge and agree that:

  • Dance and movement activities involve inherent risks, including but not limited to slips, falls, collisions, muscle strains, and other injuries.

  • You voluntarily assume all risks associated with participation.

  • To the fullest extent permitted by New Zealand law, The Salsa Lab, its teachers, assistants, and organisers will not be liable for any injury, loss, or damage arising from participation in classes or events, except where liability cannot legally be excluded.

Participants are responsible for arranging any personal insurance they consider necessary.

5. Respectful Partner Dancing

Partner dancing requires cooperation and mutual respect.

Participants agree to:

  • Dance in a safe and considerate manner.

  • Respect other dancers’ boundaries.

  • Accept or decline dances respectfully.

Participants may choose the dance role (lead or follow) they feel most comfortable learning.

Participants may decline any dance, movement, or partner interaction at any time and should respect when others choose to do the same.

6. Tikanga / Code of Conduct

All participants must adhere to The Salsa Lab Tikanga / Code of Conduct.

This code sets out expectations for respectful behaviour, consent, inclusion, and safety within the dance community.

These expectations apply:

  • During classes, workshops, and events run by The Salsa Lab, and

  • Within the wider dance community, including other schools’ classes, social dances, and events.

Participants are expected to contribute to a safe and welcoming environment for all dancers.

Behaviour that may breach the Tikanga / Code of Conduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • Harassment or intimidation

  • Unwanted physical contact

  • Ignoring or overriding another dancer’s boundaries

  • Disrespectful, discriminatory, or abusive behaviour

  • Behaviour that creates an unsafe or uncomfortable environment for others

Reports of concerning behaviour may be considered even if the behaviour occurred outside Salsa Lab classes or events, including at other dance community activities.

Where behaviour is found to be inconsistent with the Tikanga / Code of Conduct, The Salsa Lab reserves the right to take action including:

  • Providing feedback or a warning

  • Asking a participant to leave a class or event

  • Suspending or permanently removing a participant from Salsa Lab activities

If a participant is asked to leave or is removed from classes or events due to behaviour that breaches the Tikanga / Code of Conduct, no refund will be provided.

7. Photography and Media

From time to time photos or videos may be taken during classes or events for promotional or educational purposes.

By attending classes you acknowledge that you may appear in photographs or video recordings.

If you do not wish to be included, please inform a teacher or organiser.

8. Payments and Refunds

  • Class passes and term registrations are non-transferable unless otherwise agreed.

  • Refunds are not guaranteed and are considered at the discretion of The Salsa Lab, except where required by law.

9. Changes to Classes and Scheduling

The Salsa Lab reserves the right to change teachers, venues, or schedules when necessary.

Occasionally classes may need to be cancelled due to circumstances such as venue availability, illness, or unforeseen events.

Where possible, cancelled classes will be rescheduled or made up. This may include extending the term beyond the originally advertised end date. Participants should be aware that this may require availability for additional class weeks in order to complete the full course.

Reasonable notice will be given wherever possible.

10. Agreement

By registering for or attending classes you confirm that:

  • You have read and understood these Terms and Conditions.

  • You agree to the risk waiver and participation conditions.

  • You agree to follow the Tikanga / Code of Conduct.
